And to be able to illuminate the planned educational process the president of the university, Mr.Yunus Bekdemir, has been interviewed.
Firstly, we wish success to your university that is going to open in the next educational year. May it also be successful for Samsun and Turkey.
Could you introduce yourself, please?
My name is Yunus Bekdemir. After I graduated from University I completed the master’s degree on Inorganic Chemistry and then the Doctor’s degree on Organic chemistry at Essex University, UK. I have been working about “reaction mechanism in the microwave systems” .
The topic of the Project that our school has been working on is “Global Entrepreneurs”, as we say shortly.
Of course, when we talk about entrepreneurship, one of the first things coming to our minds is “risks that have been taken”.
1.       What kind of risk, do you think, you’ve taken when deciding to establish the university?
Of course, we have taken some risks when we decided to establish as second university in Samsun that has already had a well-known university .But you know that two different foundations support our university. The foundation in the Turkish culture has been important, too. Actually, our country needs graduated persons that are equipped with knowledge and experience. In this regard, we should take some risk to be able to provide that kind of qualified personnel.
The factors of risk for an educational institution have to be minimized to be acceptable. We have launched some introductory programmes and meetings and thereby aimed to reduce the risks.
2.       What type of feasibility studies provided the basis for opening the university in this process?
The industry’s needs for qualified employees have given us those ideas. Non-governmental organizations (NGO), chambers of industry, surveys and stakeholder analyses have helped us to make a decision. We have carried out surveys with 1,600 students. The final decision was influenced by the industry’s demand for fully-trained persons.
3.       You are going to start with 4 faculties and 7 branches. How have you determined those ones?
As I have told you, before we started all of this we had got most work done, like surveys, and we had analysed research papers of NGOs and the chamber of industry. The results of all these works have helped to determine these sections. Actually Turkey needs more than these, e.g. sections of international politics, sociology, psychology. But at the beginning we have to be smaller due to financial positions.
4.       It’s been seen that “entrepreneurial spirit” as well as university education are leading to success . Do you have any courses about “entrepreneurship”, you know that Turkey needs that. Could you explain, please?
As you know, one of our sections is Management and the other one is International Trade and Management. Entrepreneurship, is a natural process of these parts and also is the main course of them. But we really give an importance to entrepreneurship. Because of that all sections have this course. When our students graduate from university they must have all kind of knowledge about entrepreneurship. They mustn’t look for any job to work. They must be employers on their own job. If we reached a rate of 5% of, 400 X 0.05= 20, our country would gain 20 employers every year, from our university only. Those entrepreneurs can employ the rest of the graduates and that way the unemployment problem can be solved.
5.       You have some academicians in the field of marketing. In addition, you have   sections as "Business", "International Trade and Management". One of the duties of universities is routing functions for the business world. Do you think, you will be able to begin to perform about “entrepreneurship” with these sections in this year?
Guidance will be offered from two different centers in this building. One of them is the “vocational training center”, and the other one is “lifelong learning”. It will be given to the people who need to have some information about their future. You know universities have three duties: First, R & D (research and development), second, education and training and the last one, services to be delivered to society. Those who need expertise can find high quality experts here.  The second and third pillars can be combined, students who get their education at university can also gain practical experience in the world of work. So while the process is continuing, the students will have more experiences.
6.       Does your university have limited quota of foreign students?
Our aim is 5 students for each section in the first year. But next year we will support English training, especially for foreign students. And then it would be 20% according to our aims. We believe that kind of students could be ambassadors of peace.
7.       Does your university have a “certificate of international validity”?
You know about Bologna Process. It does not only refer to European countries, but also some other countries like Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have been involved. When our University was established quality and quantity of courses were held in accordance with this process. The students can take some of the lessons in Turkey, but the other lessons can be taken in other countries. I am of the opinion that high quality must be a lifestyle.  When students graduate from our university they  will also have an  “international vocational qualification”.
8.       Is it possible for graduates from other branches and also from other universities to get a master’s degree?
Yes, it could be possible in a year. People will be able to choose non-thesis master’s degree or master’s degree with thesis, because we believe that everyone must be able to choose the education they want to have. But, of course, we want students to perform some preconditions, e.g. take some preparatory courses - two or three more before a master’s course. This should be required for a scientific preparation.
9.       How many years, do you think, will it take to perform most efficiently?
We are starting at full speed, with high quality equipment and competent instructors, doctors, professors. Our aim is to reach maximum efficiency in 3 years.
1       One of the most important problems in Turkey is the admission of too many students to unneeded sections. Have you taken that problem into consideration when you decided on your faculties? And how will you appoint new sections in the future? Or are you going to create a free competition atmosphere?
We will never give place to non-functional sections at our university. We are going to decide by checking the result of statistics about “needed professions” by NGOs. It’s really important for us to have graduates compatible with the markets.
1      At the end, could you tell us, please, what the role of universities concerning “entrepreneurship” is?
The only thing to be said about entrepreneurship: “sine qua non”
It must be a duty of university that students gain entrepreneurship consciousness. We believe we fulfil this duty.
Thank you for your collaboration.
